Imodium Plus is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea in adults and adolescents over 12 years of age associated with abdominal discomfort caused by gas, including bloating, cramping or flatulence.

Active substances: 2 mg of loperamide hydrochloride and simethicone equivalent to 125 mg of dimethicone.

Loperamide binds to opiate receptors in the gut wall, reducing propulsive peristalsis, increasing intestinal transit time, and increasing water and electrolyte reabsorption. Simethicone is an inert surfactant with foam-preventing properties, potentially alleviating the symptoms caused by gas and associated with diarrhea. Simethicone is liquid dimethicone activated with finely divided silicon dioxide so as to enhance the foaming properties of silicone.

Dosage and method of administration:

Adults over 18 years of age: Take two tablets initially, followed by one tablet after each diarrheal stool. No more than 4 tablets per day should be taken and treatment should be limited to a maximum of 2 days. Adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age: Take one tablet initially, followed by one tablet after each diarrheal stool. No more than 4 tablets per day should be taken and treatment should be limited to a maximum of 2 days. Pediatric Population: Imodium Plus is contraindicated in children under 12 years of age.

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to the active substance(s) or to any of the excipients. Patients with acute dysentery, which is characterized by bloody stools and high fever. Patients with acute ulcerative colitis. Patients with pseudomembranous colitis associated with broad-spectrum antibiotics. Patients with bacterial enterocolitis caused by invasive organisms including Salmonella, Shigella and Campylobacter. Imodium Plus should not be administered when avoiding inhibition of peristalsis is advisable due to the possible risk of significant sequelae including ileus, megacolon and toxic megacolon. It should be stopped immediately if constipation, ileus or abdominal distension develops.

If in doubt or if symptoms persist, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
