Duphalac 667mg/ml Syrup is indicated for the treatment of habitual chronic constipation; in Porto-Systemic Encephalopathy (EPS): treatment and prevention of pre-coma and coma; and in situations where soft stools are considered a clinical benefit (hemorrhoids, anal fissure, fistulas, anal abscesses, solitary ulcers and in the anorectal postoperative period).

Active substance: lactulose.

In the colon, lactulose is broken down into low molecular weight organic acids. These acids stimulate colonic peristalsis, normalizing stool consistency. Constipation disappears, and the physiological rhythm of the colon is re-established.

Dosage and method of administration:

Duphalac can be administered diluted or undiluted. The dose of Duphalac can be found in the package leaflet that comes with the medicine and should be swallowed in one go and should not be kept in the mouth for a long time. The dose of Duphalac should be adjusted according to the individual needs of the patient. In the case of a single daily dose, it should always be taken at the same time, eg. during breakfast. During treatment with laxatives, it is recommended to drink enough fluids (1.5 - 2 liters, equivalent to 6 - 8 glasses) during the day.

Dose in constipation or clinical situations where soft stools are required: Lactulose can be administered as a single daily dose or divided into two doses using the measuring cup. After a few days, the initial dose can be adjusted to the maintenance dose, according to the response to treatment. It may take several days (2-3 days) of treatment for regular bowel movements.

Dose in pre-coma and hepatic coma (adults only): Starting dose: 30-45 ml, 3 to 4 times a day. This dose can be adjusted to the maintenance dose so that soft stools are produced 2 to 3 times a day. Pediatric population: Safety and efficacy in children (newborns and up to 18 years of age) with Porto-Systemic Encephalopathy (EPS) have not been established. No data available.

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients. Galactosemia. Bowel obstruction.

If in doubt or if symptoms persist, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

In accordance with current legislation, non-prescription medicines in Portugal can only be delivered to the municipalities of Maia, Gondomar, Matosinhos, Porto, Santo Tirso, Trofa, Valongo and Vila do Conde. This limitation does not apply to shipments to other Member States of the European Union.
