For the treatment of mixed infections by nematodes and tapeworms in cats.
Dehinel is indicated for the treatment of mixed infections by nematodes and tapeworms in cats, caused by:
- Adult stages of ascarids: Toxocara cati (syn. Mystax);
- Adult hookworm stages: Ancylostoma tubaeforme, Ancylostoma brasiliense;
- Codes: Echinococcus multilocularis, Dipylidium caninum, Hydatigera (Taenia) taeniaeformis, Mesocestoides spp., Joyeuxiella pasqualei.
Active substances: Pyrantel embonate 230 mg (equivalent to 80 mg of pyrantel) and Praziquantel 20 mg.
In this fixed combination, praziquantel acts against the tapeworms and its spectrum of action covers tapeworm species in the cat, namely Hydatigera (Taenia) taeniaeformis, Joyeuxiella pasqualei., Dipylidium caninum, Mesocestoides spp. and Echinococcus multilocularis. Praziquantel acts against all stages of these parasites in the cat's intestine.
Pirantel is the specific component against nematodes and shows good effectiveness against cat nematodes, in particular Toxocara cati (syn. Mystax), Ancylostoma tubaeformae and Ancylostoma braziliense. Pirantel acts as a cholinergic agonist, with an action similar to that of nicotine, and causes spastic paralysis of the nematodes through a depolarizing neuromuscular block.
Posology and route of administration:
5 mg of praziquantel and 20 mg of base pyrantel (57.5 mg of pyrantel embonate) per kg of body weight, which correspond to 1 tablet per 4 kg of body weight. The tablets can be administered directly to the cat or, if necessary, mixed with a small amount of food.
Kittens weighing less than 1 kg should not be treated with the veterinary medicine, as the correct dosage for these kittens may not be possible.
