Loperamide 2mg is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea, provided that causal treatment is not possible.

Active substances: loperamide hydrochloride.

Loperamide increases bowel tone, prevents propulsive peristalsis and reduces the frequency of bowel movements in case of diarrhea. Loperamide acts peripherally as an opiate receptor agonist.

Dosage and method of administration:

Oral administration. Adults and children over 10 years: 2 tablets at once. After each diarrheal stool, an additional tablet will be taken without exceeding: 6 tablets a day for adults and children over 12 years and 4 tablets a day for children between 10 and 12 years. The maximum dose for acute and chronic diarrhea is 8 tablets (16 mg) for adults; in children, it should be related to body weight (3 tablets/20 kg).

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to the active substance(s) or to any of the excipients. Children under the age of 10 years. Loperamide hydrochloride should not be used as first-line therapy in: isolated treatment of acute dysentery (characterized by high fever and blood in the stool); patients with acute ulcerative colitis and/or pseudomembranous colitis associated with broad-spectrum antibiotics; in patients with bacterial enterocolitis caused by invasive organisms including Salmonella, Shigela and Campylobacter. In general, loperamide should not be administered when it is necessary to avoid inhibition of peristalsis due to the possible risk of significant sequelae including subocclusion, megacolon and toxic megacolon and in case of abdominal distention, constipation. Treatment of diarrhea with Loperamide is symptomatic only. Whenever an underlying etiology can be determined, treatment of the cause of diarrhea should be undertaken when appropriate (or indicated). This medicine is contraindicated in the following situations: Acute episodes of hemorrhagic colitis.

If in doubt or if symptoms persist, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
