Dulcolax 5mg is indicated for use in cases of constipation and for the preparation of diagnostic aids, in pre- and post-operative treatment and whenever easier evacuation is required.

Active substance: 5.0mg of Bisacodyl.

Bisacodyl is a laxative of local action that acts by contact, for which an anti-absorption hydrophagic effect is also described, bisacodyl stimulates, after hydrolysis in the large intestine, peristaltic movements in the colon and promotes the accumulation of water and electrolytes in the lumen colic. This results in stimulation of defecation, reduced transit time, and stool softening.

Dosage and method of administration:

Dulcolax should not be used in children under 6 years of age. Unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor, the following dosages are recommended:

1. In case of constipation: Adults and children over 10 years: 1 - 2 film-coated tablets (5 - 10 mg) before bedtime. Children from 6 to 10 years: 1 coated tablet (5 mg), before bedtime. Children under the age of 10 with chronic or persistent constipation should only be treated under medical supervision. It is recommended that the coated tablets be taken in the evening so that the bowel movement takes place the next morning. Coated tablets should be swallowed whole with an adequate amount of liquid. In order not to prematurely dissolve the enteric coating, coated tablets should not be taken with products that reduce the acidity of the upper gastrointestinal tract, such as milk, antacids or certain proton pump inhibitors.

2. In the preparation of diagnostic or pre-operative procedures: In the preparation of diagnostic procedures, in pre- and post-operative treatment and in pathologies that require defecation to be facilitated, Dulcolax should only be used under medical supervision. Adults and children over 10 years: 2 film-coated tablets (10 mg) in the morning and 2 film-coated tablets (10 mg) in the evening, the day before the examination, followed by one suppository the morning of the examination. Children from 6 to 10 years: 1 coated tablet (5 mg) in the evening and half a suppository (5 mg) the next morning.

Dulcolax is contraindicated in patients with ileus, intestinal obstruction, severe abdominal surgery conditions such as acute appendicitis, severe inflammatory bowel disease and severe abdominal pain associated with nausea and vomiting which may be indicative of more serious conditions.
