Capstar is a veterinary medicine indicated for the treatment of flea infestations (C. felis).
Active substance: Nitenpyram 11.4 mg
Target species: Dogs and Cats.
The active substance, nitenpyram, belongs to the chemical class of neonicotinoids that binds to and inhibits insect-specific nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Nitenpyram interferes with nerve transmission and causes the death of adult fleas. Nitenpyram does not inhibit acetylcholinesterase.
Dosage and route of administration:
One Capstar 11.4 mg tablet should be administered to cats and small dogs weighing between 1 kg and 11 kg when a flea infestation is detected. The frequency of treatment depends on the degree of infestation. In case of severe flea infestation, it may be necessary to treat the animals every day or every two days until the infestation is under control. Treatment can be resumed if fleas reappear. No more than one treatment should be carried out per day. The tablets should be administered orally with or without food. To improve palatability, the tablets can be hidden in a small amount of food immediately before administration. The medicine does not have persistent activity. To prevent reinfestations, appropriate treatment is recommended to control the immature stages of the flea life cycle. The veterinarian must establish an appropriate treatment regimen.
