Crotax is a veterinary medicine indicated for the topical treatment of bacterial infections caused by microorganisms sensitive to chloramphenicol and inflammatory conditions of the eyeball and attached structures, namely:

  • Conjunctivitis (inflammation of the conjunctiva);
  • Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid);
  • Dacryocystitis (lacrimal sac infections);
  • Corneal ulcers;
  • Trachoma (infection of the cornea and conjunctiva);
  • Keratitis (inflammation of the cornea).

Active substance: Chloramphenicol 10 mg / g.

Chloramphenicol is used topically in the treatment of eye infections due to its broad spectrum of action and its ability to penetrate ocular tissue and aqueous humor.

Chloramphenicol is a bacteriostatic antibiotic with a broad spectrum of action and marked antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, and rickettsia but not chlamydia. Most gram-positive bacteria are inhibited at concentrations of 1-10 μg / ml, and many gram-negative bacteria are inhibited at concentrations of 0.2-5 μg / ml.

Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, and some bacterial strains are highly sensitive to chloramphenicol, which can be bactericidal for these microorganisms.

Chloramphenicol acts as a potent inhibitor of microbial protein synthesis, binding reversibly to the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, and inhibiting the peptidyl transferase stage of protein synthesis.

In some populations sensitive to chloramphenicol, resistance at reduced levels may arise through the selection of mutants with reduced permeability. Resistances with clinical significance are due to the production of chloramphenicol acetyltransferase, an enzyme per plasmid that inactivates the molecule.

Posology and route of administration:

Apply topically to the ocular mucosa (at the internal angle) 2 to 4 times a day. During the first application, it is advisable to discard the small portion of ointment in contact with the lid.

Since the action of the antibiotic is predominantly bacteriostatic, therapy should be continued until 48 hours after the objective cure.
