Felimazole is a veterinary medication indicated for stabilizing hyperthyroidism in cats before thyroidectomy and for the long-term treatment of feline hyperthyroidism.

Thiamazole acts in vivo by blocking the biosynthesis of thyroid hormone. Its main action is to inhibit the binding of iodate to the thyroid peroxidase enzyme, preventing the catalyzed iodination of thyroglobulin and the synthesis of T3 and T4.

Dosage and route of administration

Oral use. For the stabilization of feline hyperthyroidism before surgical thyroidectomy and for the long-term treatment of feline hyperthyroidism, the recommended starting dose is 5 mg per day (1 ml of the veterinary medicinal product). Whenever possible, the total daily dose should be divided into two equal doses and administered morning and evening. If, for compliance reasons, a once-daily dose is preferable, this is acceptable, although twice-daily dosing may be more effective in the short term. To administer the dose accurately, use the syringe provided in the package. The syringe fits into the bottle and is graduated in increments of 0.25 mg up to 5 mg. Withdraw the required dose and administer the veterinary medicinal product directly into the cat's mouth. Hematology, biochemistry, and total serum T4 should be evaluated before starting treatment and after 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 20 weeks, and subsequently every 3 months. In each of the recommended monitoring intervals, the dose should be titrated to have effect according to total T4 and clinical response to treatment. Dose adjustments should be made in increments of 2.5 mg (0.5 ml of the veterinary medicinal product) and the aim should be to achieve the lowest possible dose rate. In cats requiring particularly small dose adjustments, increments of 1.25 mg of thiamazole (0.25 ml of the veterinary medicinal product) may be used. If more than 10 mg per day (2 ml of the veterinary medicinal product) is required, animals should be monitored with particular care. The administered dose should not exceed 20 mg/day (4 ml of the veterinary medicinal product).

For long-term treatment of hyperthyroidism, the animal must be treated for life.
