Felimazole is a veterinary medicine indicated for the stabilization of hyperthyroidism in cats before thyroidectomy and for long-term treatment of feline hyperthyroidism.

Tiamazol acts in vivo by blocking thyroid hormone biosynthesis. Its main action is to inhibit the binding of the iodate to the thyroid peroxidase enzyme, preventing the catalyzed iodination of thyroglobulin and the synthesis of T3 and T4.

Posology and route of administration

For oral administration only.

For the stabilization of feline hyperthyroidism prior to surgical thyroidectomy and for the long-term treatment of feline hyperthyroidism, the recommended starting dose is 5 mg per day.

Whenever possible, the total daily dose should be divided in two and administered in the morning and evening. The tablets should not be divided in half.

If, for compliance reasons, once-daily dosing with a 5 mg tablet is preferable, it is acceptable that 2.5 mg of the tablet is administered twice daily to be more effective in the short term. The 5 mg tablet is also suitable for cats that require higher doses.

Hematology, biochemistry and total serum T4 should be evaluated before starting treatment and after 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 20 weeks and, subsequently, quarterly.

At each of the recommended monitoring intervals, the dose should be titrated to take effect according to the total T4 and the clinical response to treatment. Dose adjustments should be made in 2.5 mg increments and the aim should be to achieve the lowest possible dose frequency.

If a dose of more than 10 mg per day is required, animals should be monitored with special care.

The dose administered should not exceed 20 mg / day.

For the long-term treatment of hyperthyroidism, the animal must be treated throughout life.
