Apelka it is indicated for the stabilization of hyperthyroidism in cats before a thyroidectomy and long-term treatment of feline hyperthyroidism.
Active substances: Tiamazol 5 mg.
Thiamazole acts by blocking thyroid hormone biosynthesis in vivo. Its primary action is to inhibit the binding of iodide to the thyroid peroxidase enzyme, thus preventing the catalytic iodination of thyroglobulin and the synthesis of T3 and T4.
Posology and route of administration:
Administer only orally. The veterinary medicinal product must be administered directly into the cat's mouth. Do not use in food, as the efficacy of the veterinary medicinal product has not been established when administered by this route.
For the stabilization of feline hyperthyroidism before thyroidectomy and for the long-term treatment of feline hyperthyroidism, the recommended starting dose is 5 mg per day. The total daily dose should be divided into two doses and administered in the morning and evening.
In order to enhance the stabilization of the patient with hyperthyroidism, the same medication administration schedule should be used daily in relation to food administration. Before starting treatment and after 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 20 weeks and thereafter every 3 months, an assessment of hematological and biochemical parameters as well as the total serum T4 should be performed.
