For the symptomatic or adjuvant treatment of inflammatory diseases and diseases mediated by the immune system in dogs and cats.

Active substance: Prednisolone 20 mg

Prednisolone is a semi-synthetic corticosteroid derived from natural hydrocortisone (cortisol). However, the effect on mineral and glucose metabolism is less (about half) than that of cortisol. This minimizes fluid retention and unfavorable hypertension. The effect of prednisolone is anti-inflammatory. When an inflammatory reaction is useful (for example to prevent further invasion by microorganisms), suppression of this defense mechanism is counterproductive. However, when the inflammatory response is excessive and / or harmful (eg response to an autoimmune or allergic process), the defense inflammatory response worsens the situation and repression by corticosteroids can be of great therapeutic importance.

- Through a protein catabolic effect, the formation of granulation tissue is inhibited.

- Inhibition of inflammation is also achieved through the stabilizing effect of prednisolone on the membranes of lysosomes

- Corticosteroids reduce the development of inflammatory exudate and local edema by stimulating vasoconstriction and decreasing capillary permeability.

- Antiallergic and immunosuppressive effect: these effects are partially related to anti-inflammatory activity and are mainly directed against cellular immunoreactivity (T lymphocytes). Since oral corticosteroids develop their therapeutic effect only after several hours, they are less suitable for the treatment of anaphylactic (acute) reactions such as septic shock.

Posology and route of administration:

Oral administration.

The dose and total duration of treatment is determined by the veterinarian based on the individual case, depending on the severity of the symptoms. The lowest effective dose should be used.

Initiation dose: 0.5 - 4 mg per kg of body weight per day.

For long-term treatments: when the desired effect has been achieved after a period of daily dose administration, the dose should be reduced until the lowest effective dose is reached. Dose reduction should be done by therapy on alternate days and / or dividing the dose in half at intervals of 5-7 days until the lowest effective dose is reached.

Dogs should be treated in the morning and cats at night due to differences in daily rhythms.
