Libromide antiepileptic agent for administration as an adjunct to phenobarbital to control refractory cases of canine epilepsy.

Posology and route of administration:

For oral administration. Administer with food.

Administer to dogs with refractory epilepsy, in cases where the control of the attacks of epilepsy is unsatisfactory although the therapy with phenobarbital is adequate, when the concentrations of phenobarbital in the serum are stable in the therapeutic range.

The dose should be determined for each dog, as the required dose depends on the nature and severity of the disease.

Administer with food at an initial dose of 15 mg / kg body weight twice a day (equivalent to a total daily dose of 30 mg / kg). Administration twice a day is recommended to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal disorders. Due to the 24-day half-life of bromide, it may take several weeks or months to achieve stable serum concentrations.

For at least the first three months after starting therapy, measure serum bromide concentrations every 4 weeks. The expected therapeutic concentration of bromide in the serum (when administered together with phenobarbital) is 800 to 2000 μg / ml. Dose adjustments should be made taking into account the frequency of epilepsy attacks, the half-life of the bromide and the respective concentration in the serum.

Long-term control of serum bromide (and associated phenobarbital) concentrations should be carried out, provided that it is clinically justified, case by case.

Permanent control of side effects is recommended in the event of higher serum bromide concentrations.

Administration to dogs weighing less than 11 kg should be subject to a risk / benefit assessment.
