Nicotinell Mint 2mg is indicated in the treatment of tobacco dependence by alleviating nicotine withdrawal symptoms, including the urge to smoke, thereby facilitating smoking cessation or temporary reduction in smoking in smokers motivated to quit. Permanent cessation of smoking is the ultimate goal of treatment. The 2 mg lozenges should be used in the presence of severe nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Medical advice and support typically increases the success rate.

Active substances: 2mg of nicotine.

Nicotine, the main alkaloid in tobacco products and a naturally occurring autonomous substance, is a nicotine receptor agonist in the central and peripheral nervous system. Nicotine has been shown to be addictive in tobacco consumption.

Dosage and method of administration:

Nicotinell Mint 2mg lozenges are indicated for smokers with a strong or very strong dependence on nicotine or for those who have previously failed in their attempt to quit smoking with nicotine replacement therapy. The optimal dosage should be selected according to the table in the package leaflet. If any adverse effects are observed with the use of high doses (2mg lozenges), the use of low doses (1mg lozenges) should be considered. The starting dose should be individualized based on the patients' degree of nicotine dependence. The patient should suck a lozenge whenever he feels the need to smoke. Initially, one lozenge should be sucked every 1-2 hours. The usual dose is 8-12 lozenges a day. Both in smoking cessation and in reducing smoking with Nicotinell lozenges, the maximum daily dose should be 15 lozenges. Do not use more than one tablet per hour. Nicotinell lozenges should first be used for smoking cessation. Smoking Cessation: Smokers should additionally stop smoking during treatment with Nicotinell Mint Lozenges. The duration of treatment is individual. Usually treatment should last for at least 3 months. After 3 months, the user should gradually reduce the number of lozenges, or alternatively, switch to 1mg nicotine lozenges, then gradually reduce the number of lozenges per day. Treatment should be discontinued when the dose is reduced to 1-2 lozenges per day. Use beyond 6 months of nicotine medicines, such as Nicotinell Mint 2 mg lozenges, is generally not recommended. Some ex-smokers may need longer treatment to avoid relapse. Patients who have been using oral nicotine replacement therapy for more than 9 months should seek additional help and consult with their healthcare professional. Counseling can help smokers to quit. Reduction of smoking habit: Nicotinell lozenges should be used between periods when the patient smokes, in order to prolong the intervals without smoking, with the objective of reducing smoking habit as much as possible. Cigarettes should be gradually replaced with Nicotinell lozenges. If a reduction of at least 50% in the number of cigarettes has not been achieved after 6 weeks, professional advice should be sought. A smoking cessation attempt should be made as soon as the patient feels ready, however this should not occur more than 4 months after starting treatment. After this attempt, the number of lozenges should be gradually reduced, reducing for example 1 lozenge every 2-5 days. If an attempt to stop smoking cannot be made within 6 months of starting treatment, professional advice should be sought. Regular use of Nicotinell lozenges beyond 6 months is generally not recommended. Some ex-smokers may need longer lozenge treatment in order to avoid smoking again. Counseling can help smokers to quit. Administration method: Each lozenge must be sucked until the flavor becomes intense. The lozenge should be placed between the cheek and the gum. When the flavor of the lozenge becomes less intense, suck the lozenge again. This routine will be adapted individually and must be repeated until the lozenge has completely dissolved (about 30 minutes). Concomitant use of acidic beverages, such as coffee or carbonated beverages, may decrease oral absorption of nicotine. Acidic drinks should be avoided 15 minutes before sucking the lozenge. Do not eat or drink while the lozenge is in your mouth.

Contraindications:

There is no experience in the treatment of adolescents under 18 years of age with Nicotinell lozenges. Nicotinell Mint lozenges should not be used by non-smokers.
