Magolac 13.8g Powder for Oral Solution is indicated for the treatment of chronic constipation in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over. Magolac is also effective in resolving fecal impaction, defined as refractory constipation with fecal loading from the rectum and/or colon.

Active substances: Macrogol 3350 ; Sodium chloride; Sodium bicarbonate; Potassium chloride.

Macrogol 3350 acts by osmotic action in the intestine, inducing a laxative effect. Macrogol 3350 increases stool bulk, which triggers colonic motility via neuromuscular pathways. The physiological consequence is an improvement in the propulsive colonic transport of soft stools and in the facilitation of defecation. Electrolytes combined with macrogol 3350 are replaced along the intestinal barrier (mucosa) by serum electrolytes and excreted in fecal water with no gain or loss of sodium, potassium or water.

Dosage and method of administration:

Constipation: The period of treatment for constipation with Magolac does not normally exceed two weeks, although it can be repeated if necessary. As with all laxatives, prolonged use is not recommended. Long-term use may be necessary for the treatment of patients with severe or refractory chronic constipation secondary to multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease, or caused by regular medication that causes constipation, in particular opioids and antimuscarinics. Adults, adolescents and elderly: 1 – 3 sachets per day in divided doses, according to individual response. For long-term use, the dose can be adjusted down to 1 or 2 sachets per day. Children (under 12 years of age): Not recommended. Other macrogol presentations for pediatric use are available. Fecal impaction: The period of treatment for impaction with Magolac does not normally exceed 3 days. Adults, adolescents and elderly: 8 sachets per day, all of which must be taken within 24 hours. Children (under 12 years of age): Not recommended. Other macrogol presentations for pediatric use are available. Each sachet must be dissolved in 125 ml of water. For use in case of fecal impaction, 8 sachets can be dissolved in 1 liter of water and kept in a closed container and in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to the active substance(s) or to any of the excipients. Intestinal perforation or obstruction, due to structural or functional disturbances of the intestinal wall, ileus, severe inflammatory conditions of the intestinal tract, such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and toxic megacolon.
