Iron is an essential nutrient, necessary for the proper functioning of the body, especially for the production of hemoglobin, the protein responsible for the transport and use of oxygen by tissues.
There are some situations, physiological or pathological, that can determine a deficiency of iron in our body, as a result of increased needs or increased losses of this essential element, and anemia may even develop.
Iron deficiency may be due to reduced iron intake, malabsorption in the digestive tract, increased physiological consumption needs (adolescents, women of childbearing age or pregnant women), other pathological conditions (renal failure, hemodialysis, problems hematological), blood loss (menstrual bleeding or other), or a combination of some of these causes.
